Ghana’s
Forest and Wildlife Policy, which
was launched in 1994, is the guiding document for the
development of the sector.
The Forestry Commission, the main implementing
body of the Policy, is a corporate body integrating the
activities of all the public agencies that were previously
individually responsible for the management and regulation
of utilization of forest and wildlife resources in Ghana. The Wildlife Division now forms an integral part of the Forestry Commission amids other divisions such as the Timber Industry Development Division and Forest Services Division. This as a result of the Forestry Commission Act, 1999, Act 571.
Since the enactment of the Wild Animals Preservation Act, 1961, Act 43, there have been other subisidiary Legislations. These are the Wildlife Reserves Regulations 1971, L.I. 710 and Wildlife Conservation Regulations 1971, L.I. 685 from which the Wildlife Department now Wildlife Division draws its authority.
Over the years, these subisidary regulations: L.I.685 and L.I.710 have witnessed several amendments. The laws in this state become unavailable in time of need for easy reference by the Law enforcement agencies such as the Police, Magistrates, Lawyers, District Assemblies, Traditional Rulers, NGOs, and other stakeholders in wildlife management. The complilation of these laws is to make them available for easy reference.
