CUSTOMISED TRAINING
To accommodate specific
requests from the wood processing factories for training
of personnel, WITC makes special arrangements with companies
who require some specific assistance and provide them with
intensive training in areas such as sawmilling, moulding,
sawdoctoring and tooling, machining and kiln drying. The
course package is designed to suit the needs of the company
concerned and it is held on the company's own premises or
at WITC.
Under the WITC 'Customised
factory training' scheme, where specific requests from wood
processing factories are accommodated, the Centre enters
into a collaborative programme with organisations / institutions. Under
this programme, WITC plans and executes on behalf of institutions/organisations,
programmes in technology transfer and demonstration workshops
as part of the Centre's programme for especially micro and
medium scale enterprises. In all, since 2000, over fifty
(50) companies have been given training in areas such as:

LOGGING AND HARVESTING
COURSE
In line with our objective
of ensuring efficient capacity development, WITC as from
June 1998, started offering six-week residential courses
in Logging and Harvesting to assist industry to conform with
some of the demands expected of parties to the now Timber
Utilization Contracts (TUCs).
COURSE PRESENTATION
A CORE of industry
professional and experienced Trainers, Consultants and Associates
run the courses using practical demonstrations, lectures,
discussions, role plays, case studies, Audio-visual aids
(including videos) and field trips. Other trainers are
sourced from a worldwide network of experts in timber
mills and specialized management and business consulting
agencies.

EXTENSION AND CONSULTANCY SERVICES
WITC meets the salient needs
of the timber industry not only with training but extension
and consultancy services as well in Sawdoctoring, Wood Processing
and Kiln Drying etc.
1. SAWDOCTORING - In
this skilled trade, bandsaws, circular saws, cutting assessories
and related machines in a sawmill are kept in good condition. This
is done through proper maintenance to ensure that the sawmill
does good quality work and produces lumber efficiently. The
major activities are:
· Bracing, tensioning,
swaging and sharpening
· Levelling, twist-removal,
tensioning, jointing, re-toothing, re-tipping
· Grinding of pulleys,
track alignments etc.
· Servicing of solid
profile cutters and planer knives
· Expert advice to
millers in times of need.
2. WOOD PROCESSING - Machined
wood products are designed and developed from the Centre's
moulding machine. Some of the products from species
like Asanfena, Black and White Ofram, Emire, mixed Redwoods
for sale on the local market are:
· Top
quality T&G profiles
· Corner battens
· Skirting boards |

Customised production of
the same items is also done for interested clients.
3. KILN DRYING - This
is meant to maintain high and accepted standards in kiln
handling, its operation and maintenance. Major activities
include:
· Giving technical
advice in the acquisition of kilns and boilers.
· Assisting to improve
existing kilns
· Designing and building
locally made kilns and boilers.
· Providing on-the-job
(factory-site) training.
